Who we are
John J. Burger, P.C. is a three-person architectural practice founded in January 1991 based in downtown Fredericksburg, Virginia. Over a 30-year period this office has produced a large volume of work with projects ranging from a few hundred square feet to upwards of 100,000 square feet. A majority of our work includes project types such as office buildings, civic buildings, retail centers, warehouses, tenant improvements of varying scopes and complexities, churches and recreation facilities.
This office has a strong reputation in the design and construction industry and over 95% of our work has been with repeat clients. We have had relationships with these clients ranging from a few years up to over 25 years. This office has a distinct skill in managing project teams (including consultants and contractors), bringing projects within and under budget and balancing the functionality and aesthetics of design.
John J Burger
Mr. Burger graduated from the College of Architecture at Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina in 1977 and is a licensed architect in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Prior to opening his private practice, Mr. Burger was Vice-President and managing principal of Architectural Design Group, Inc., an award-winning design firm based in Alexandria, Virginia. He has acquired a broad range of design and technical experience working his way from draftsman to project architect to managing principal of a 20+ person architectural firm. His firm represents his varied experience in both large and small commercial projects along with experience in residential additions and residences.
Now in business for over 30 years, John J. Burger, Architect has always been sensitive to client's wishes and project budgets.
It is Mr. Burger's philosophy that architecture is the skillful management of people and money during the design process. An architect must possess strong design, technical, and management skills; through these attributes an aesthetically pleasing and functional building can be realized.
Interior Designer & Architect
Lisa has an unique set of skills and experience in the design and construction industry. After receiving a B.S. in Interior Design in 1992 she began working for John J. Burger P.C. in 1994 and worked on a long list of commercial and residential projects ranging in size and project types. She then left that position and began to pursue a Master of Architecture from 2010 to 2014. During her graduate studies Lisa worked at EYA, a large real estate development company in Bethesda, MD. In 2015 Lisa transitioned to a new role at a large developer, IDI Group Companies in Arlington, VA and assisted in the management of many large-scale multi-family projects. After completing her master’s degree, she came back to work for John J. Burger P.C. and now serves as a project manager/project architect. Lisa is a registered architect in Virginia as of 2022 and has been a certified interior designer since 2001.
Nicholas joined the team in early 2022 after spending the beginning of his career in the Carolinas. He worked at both 1x1 Design and Boudreaux at his time in Columbia, SC where he worked on a range of projects including residential additions, commercial tenant improvements, adaptive re-use, faith-based projects and a slew of other unique project types and clientele. A lot of his work during his time in South Carolina included work for Clemson University, University of South Carolina and a number of small colleges and community colleges. Most recently Nicholas worked at BB+M Architecture in Charlotte, NC working on a range of multi-family apartment complexes and multi-story office buildings. Nicholas is registered architect in Virginia, North Carolina and Maryland.
